Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)

What is the Mental Health First Aid program?

The National Council for Behavioral Health's Mental Health First Aid training is a public education program that teaches participants how to recognize and respond to the signs of a mental health challenge. MHFA training is appropriate for all and does not require background knowledge in any specific field. It complements a number of professions, including educators, allied health workers, public servants, and anyone who wants to make their community healthier, happier, and safer for all.

Topics covered will include:

  • Depression
  • Mood disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Trauma
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use disorders

By the completion of the training, participants will learn how to apply the Mental Health First Aid action plan in a variety of situations, including when someone is experiencing panic attacks, suicidal thoughts or behaviors, non-suicidal self-injury, acute psychosis (hallucinations or delusions), overdose or withdrawal from alcohol or drug use, and reaction to a traumatic event.
