Why is a tuition increase necessary?

The Alamo Colleges District is funded from three major sources:

1. Student Tuition & Fees

2. State Appropriations Funding

3. Property Taxes

The State of Texas has kept the overall dollar amount of appropriations relatively flat since 2002; however, student enrollment has increased 41% over the same time period, reducing the percentage Alamo Colleges District receives from the state. The end effect is that we have many more students, but we are receiving less money from the state.

This means that the Alamo Colleges District is more reliant than ever before on tuition and fees to balance the budget. A tuition increase is a difficult decision; however, not doing so would be harmful to the academic programming and student experience we offer.

What does the spring 2019 tuition increase look like?

Beginning spring 2019, per semester credit hours (SCH) will be $13 per hour more. This applies to in-district, out-of-district and non-resident students.

What if a student experiences financial hardship because of the increase?

Financial aid will keep higher education affordable for the majority of our students.

Over 75% of our students have tuition and fee costs covered by financial aid, grants, waivers or third parties (including the military). For Pell Grant recipients, the increases are covered by recent grant increases.
